SUMMARY:Walk on the Wild Side\, Trout Valley Fen\, Saturday\, May 11\, 2024\, 2pm
DESCRIPTION:Description:  The Fen in Trout Valley is common land that is approximately 8 acres in size and is located on either side of Trout Valley Road.  Until a few years ago the fen was overgrown with invasive species including significant accumulations of buckthorn\, burning bush\, honeysuckle and garlic mustard that threatened the native plants (including one of the finest stands of skunk cabbage in Northeast Illinois). A number of Trout Valley residents have been working since 2015 to remove these invasive shrubs. This effort has resulted in several benefits including increased densities of under-story native plants and shrubs\, reduced sheet erosion\, increased ground water infiltration and increased native species diversity. The volunteers\, commonly known as the Fensters\, have created walking trails throughout the fen with a combined length of nearly ¾ of a mile.  The walk will be led by one of the Fensters\, David Hall.  Expect to see some nice areas of Virginia Bluebells\, Skunk Cabbage and Marsh Marigolds\, among other plants.  This is a guided walk and will begin at 2pm.  The walk is free of charge and no pre-registration is required. \nDirections:  The walk will begin at the Trout Valley Barn\, 167 Country Commons Rd\, Trout Valley.  Heading southeast through Cary on Rt 14\, turn right onto Cary Algonquin Rd at the stop light.  Country Commons Rd will be the second left (Country Commons Shopping Center on the corner).  Veer left at the 3-way to stay on Country Commons\, then an immediate right into the Barn driveway.

SUMMARY:WPPC's Annual Native Plant Sale
DESCRIPTION:The WPPC’s Annual Native Plant Sale will be Sunday\, May 5\, 2024 in the commons area at McHenry County College.  The sale runs from noon until 3\, but it’s best to arrive early as many of our most popular species sell out quickly.  We often have a line forming before 11:30.  We offer native plants for many habitats\, so there will be something for you no matter if your yard is sunny\, shady\, wet or dry.  This year’s sale will offer over 130 species with prices generally in the $4 to $9 range.  Plant availability changes from year to year\, but here is a plant list of what should be available.  In addition to plants native to northern Illinois we will have a a selection of books available for sale as well as a vendor offering heirloom vegetable plants and herbs.  Not sure how to incorporate native plants into your yard?  Here is a resource with sample gardens and plant lists for various habitats.

DESCRIPTION:Description: This 3 acre property has a variety of habitats: pond\, steep slope\, partial forest and dry and sunny. The native gardens range from brand new to 5 years old.  Come learn from our mistakes and successes!  Some of our planting goals have been to create low maintenance gardens in each habitat\,  provide food and shelter for wildlife\, create areas of interest with various ‘rooms’ and paths and to complement the neighbors’ yards.  Ever since we started putting native plants in\, we haven’t needed to buy chrysanthemums in the fall since we have an abundance of color created by the native plants. You should receive a colorful welcome during this mid-September walk.  We’ll discuss the various habitats\, plants\, design features and tree ID.  All WPPC garden walks are free of charge and there is no pre-registration required.  This is not an open house.  The guided walk led by the homeowners will start at the posted time. \n\n\n\nDirections: From Woodstock proceed North on Route 47. DESCRIPTION:Description:  We will meet in front of West Elementary School and walk a short distance to Butternut Preserve where site stewards Judi Stuck and Nicole Griffith will guide us through the beautiful 16 acre preserve along the Kishwaukee River. A path leads through the tall grass prairie and crosses over a bridge and through woodlands with a diversity of trees and shrubs. Buckthorn removal is an ongoing activity here!  Many rare warblers and  other migrating birds stop here to refuel in the spring and fall.  Natives are continually added to provide food for them along with the many resident birds.  Learn about Meercat Mountain–a favorite destination at Butternut!  Afterward\, we will be walking four blocks to the next walk at the property of Nicole and Mike Griffith.  They live in an older neighborhood where an aging lawn is giving way to gardens that are alive with native plantings. Thanks to the help of the WPPC’s mentoring program\, this bit of earth they call their own is shared with a myriad of butterflies and birds. DESCRIPTION:Description:  Our yard consists of a prairie garden\, a native shrub-land garden\, a mixed shrub-land garden\, various native borders\, two vegetable gardens\, an herb garden and some spots of lawn. Of particular interest is the wide diversity of plant material and our efforts to control weeds and stabilize the compositions using cool season ground covers.  This yard is a great example of how good native plants can look in a collection of gardens that have been well-planned and meticulously cared for.  All WPPC walks are free of charge and no pre-registration is required.  This is not an open house.  Guided walks will be led by the homeowners at the specified times.\n\nDirections:  From Rt. 31 in McHenry go west on Rt. 120 (Elm).  Just before the H & R Block office turn right (north) on Beach Rd. Take Beach Rd all the way into the West Beach parking lot and park there. Walk two doors west and cross the street. People with mobility issues can park in front of the house. DESCRIPTION:Description:  A number of paths traverse through this 3/4 of an acre restored native woodland with more than 175 different native plant species including 50+ Oak Trees and 30+ Hickories.  Sedges and forbs bloom throughout the season. In May the yard will feature blooming Trillium\, Virginia Bluebells and Spring Beauties to name a few.  There will also be many mid-season plants emerging from the woodland floor.  Deb started naturalizing the property in 1998.  Her motivation was to eliminate invasive plants and attract butterflies and birds to the woods. Her first love has always been butterflies\, and the pretty flowers are a by-product of the process.  All WPPC Walks on the Wild Side are free of charge and no pre-registration is required.  This is not an open house.  Guided walks led by the homeowner start only at the posted times.\n\nDirections:  From Crystal Lake\, take Crystal Lake Ave east across Rt. 31.  About a mile past 31\, turn right onto Kilkenny Dr.  The road will wrap around on itself.  Follow it all the way to the cul de sac at the end.  Parking is available on the street.  3406 S Kilkenny Dr\, Crystal Lake.\n\n         \n

DESCRIPTION:The WPPC’s annual Native Plant Sale will be Sunday\, May 7\, 2023 from 12pm to 3pm in the commons area of McHenry County College.  The entrance to the commons area is located on the south side of the campus\, which is the opposite side from the intersection with the stop light (Rte 14 and Lucas Rd/Tartan Dr).  We’ll have a full selection of natives on hand for sunny\, shady or moist areas of your property.  Plant selection varies from year to year\, but this plant list shows species that are normally available.  There will be a selection of heirloom vegetable and herb plants for sale as well.  Be sure to arrive early as many species sell out quickly!  We often have people lining up by 11am.  Would you like to learn more about native plants\, gardening with them\, their habitats and the insects they attract?  We’ll also have a book table with an extensive selection of titles on our natural world. \n  \n                        \n

DESCRIPTION:Natural Landscape Seminar: The WPPC’s annual Natural Landscape Seminar will be held on Saturday\, February 18\, 2023 in the Luecht Auditorium at McHenry County College.  The pre-registration period is now over\, but you may still register at the door starting at 8am on February 18.  We’ve confirmed some great speakers this year as we work to restore the seminar after a three year hiatus.  The presenters include a nationally-known\, award-winning author\, a restoration ecologist and the creator of a TikTok channel on foraging.  Our final presentation will look at the first ten years of Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge and where it’s going in the future.  We hope you’ll take a break from the winter weather and come hear some wonderful presentations on native plants\, habitats and the critters they attract.  We’ve kept the early-bird pricing at a very reasonable $40 ($50 at the door)\, which includes all four presentations and access to our vendors\, book table and famous buffet lunch.  For those who wish to follow Covid protocols\, there will be a section where extra distancing and masks are required.  See the seminar page for more details and the schedule of events.

DESCRIPTION:Description:  As you walk along the paths\, you’ll meander through oak forests (with bottle brush and other natives on the forest floor)\, a restored pond\, prairie fields on gently rolling hills with wide vistas of sky and edged by oaks. Many species of birds are attracted to this beautiful parcel which has been lovingly restored by removing invasive species and planting native plants.  This parcel was purchased with the intent of protecting it from development.  It’s located just west of the Hackmatack National Forest footprint\, and is surrounded by natural areas owned by McHenry County Conservation District\, the Land Conservancy and Openlands. \nJim Keenan and Dorothy Robin will guide you on this walk.  The guided walk will begin at 10am. \nDirections:  Parking will be at the Alden United Methodist Church.  Take Rt 47 north from Woodstock.  At the stop sign\, turn left on Charles Rd.  After a few miles\, Charles Rd will turn into Alden Rd.  Continue north to Rt 173.  Turn left\, and the church will be a short distance on the right.  16532 IL Rte 173\, Harvard\, IL \n

The yard is planted with a delightful combination of native plants\, various grasses\, native shrubs and trees. John will discuss “his dilemma” of what to do about shade created by mature trees and shrubs on his sun-loving plants.  The owner-guided walk starts at 11:15am\, or whenever the group arrives from the first walk at Christ the King Parish.  Note:  This is the second of two garden walks today. \nDirections:  From the church\, turn left (south) and go about 600 yards to the third right\, Hiawatha Drive. Turn right and go through the four-way stop intersection. In 75 yards\, turn right on Winnebago Drive. The Shiel house is the second one on the left\, 4707 Winnebago Drive in Wonder Lake. DESCRIPTION:Description: On a whim about twenty years ago\, Dave Zieger and John Shiel agreed that they might as well start working to restore a portion of the church property in Wonder Lake that was right across the street from Dave’s living room window. Dave brought it up\, since its neglected condition was more noticed by him than anyone else. John had married into the parish some years prior. We began. Litter and dumped materials were hauled out and invasive trees and shrubs were cut and burned at a relaxed pace. We communicated with the new pastor about the plan\, and it turns out he was fairly conversant with natural area restoration. He gave his blessing\, literally. The site is about 2.5 acres on a total property of 23 acres. It’s an old field of about forty years with only small bits of mowing by a neighbor for aesthetics. We scattered prairie seeds and burned\, sometimes with a permit. Now it shows some success\, while still very much a work in progress. The guided walk starts at 10am.  Note:  This is the first of two garden walks today.\n \nDirections:  The church is on the east (McHenry) side of Wonder Lake. From the stop light intersection of Rte120 and East Wonder Lake Rd\, turn north for 2 mi. Note: the road going south of the stop light is Ridge Rd. After 2 mi.\, at a four-way stop at Hancock Dr.\, turn right and go about two blocks to a stop sign. Turn left for the resumption of East Wonder Lake Rd. and go about a mile north. The church is on the right/east side and is a 1960s A-frame structure. If coming from the north\, use Barnard Mill Rd and turn right close to the Busy Bee Restaurant\, turn south on East Wonder Lake Rd. and go about a half mile. DESCRIPTION:Property Description: Explore a 1.25-acre yard in a residential neighborhood that has been converted from traditional non-native landscaping to majority native species. Sarah and Scott have lived at the property for 10 years with their two children and dog and have been removing invasive species and adding native trees\, shrubs\, and plants ever since. Formal front yard sun and shade gardens (HOA-friendly)\, foundation plantings\, privacy hedgerows\, lawn-to-prairie conversion\, newly-planted ground cover gardens\, and a 1/2-acre oak savanna restoration with a tiny creek will be visited. Hear about their maintenance techniques\, including the use of prescribed fire in even the smallest gardens. As the coordinator for The Land Conservancy’s Conservation@Home program and a previous WPPC mentee\, Sarah has received much inspiration from our community and has a passion for blending the beauty of native plants in a formal setting with ecological function. Come hear the lessons learned (ugh bindweed is the worst)\, and see the projects-in-progress! DESCRIPTION:Description:  Barb and Mike moved to Crystal Lake in the summer of 2006.  At that time\, there were large portions of the 1 1/2 acre corner property that were simply manicured lawn.  Starting in 2009\, with H.M. Hepperlen as mentor\, prairie plants were introduced and the yard has continued to evolve with various garden additions.  You’ll see 17 types of native trees\, including Bur\, White and Chinquapin Oaks\, as well as Shagbark Hickory and Tulip Tree. Also\, there are 15 different types of native shrubs with large groupings of Nannyberry\, Hazelnut and Blackhaw as hedges\, and Snowberry around the gazebo.  Large areas have been turned into prairie-like gardens\, lower wetland plantings\, and partial-shade gardens.  The yard starts blooming in April/May with Woodland Phlox\, Bellwort\, Jacob’s Ladder\, Sand Coreopsis and Spicebush\, continues through summer with numerous prairie plants and wraps up with gorgeous asters and goldenrods.   A few goals include continuing to add more shade plants as some younger trees mature\, continuing to add sedges\, and making progress on our western-facing slope.  This yard is a showcase for native plants in multiple meticulously-maintained gardens.  Guided walk will start at 10am.  Following the walk\, H.M. Hepperlen will lead a tour of a portion of the Hollows (an MCCD Nature Preserve) which is adjacent to the Wyndwood subdivision and a short walk from the Mikulicz’s.  This area was previously mined leaving behind a sandy sub-soil.  It has been restored to a sand prairie and savanna with plants such as Bur Oak\, Sumac\, Little Bluestem\, Spotted Bee Balm\, Rough Blazing Star and Pale Purple Coneflower.  The tour should take 45-60 minutes.\nDirections: Our property is located in the Wyndwood subdivision. DESCRIPTION:My property is in a newer “conservation design” subdivision which has about 25 acres of well-managed prairie plantings. The non-turf areas of my 1/2 acre yard feature almost entirely native species arranged in planting beds\, three rain gardens and a backyard prairie as well as a nice mix of native shrubs and trees. The tour also includes the beautiful Boloria Meadows Nature Preserve immediately to the west. DESCRIPTION:Our 1½ acre yard has several perennial flower gardens that attract butterflies\, bees and humming birds. The highlight is the 50’x100’ plus wildflower garden with native wetland plants started with seed in 2009.  In the center of it all is a 25’ Bald-Cypress Tree.  We have several nesting bird boxes that host Blue Birds\, Tree Swallows and Wrens. Throughout the year we get Baltimore and Orchard Orioles\, Cedar Waxwings\, Rose-Breasted Grosbeaks\, White-Breasted Nuthatches\, Northern Cardinals\, and Finches.  Off the backyard deck is a 11’x17’ Zero Edge pond and a 10’ stream with water plant bog filtration. The pond is home to a floating island\, 9 Koi and a variety of goldfish. \n  \nDirections:  From north-bound Rt 31\, turn right onto Johnsburg Rd\, then left on Spring Grove Rd\, which turns into Winn Rd north of Rt 12.  Turn left on White Tail Dr\, then right on Squirrel Dr at the end.  From there\, left on Deer Trail.  The house will be on the left. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:The Westwood Elementary School Garden was created in 2018 to enhance the school’s curriculum and serve as an outdoor classroom. It is a community effort led by the school staff and enhanced by help from Judy and Jack Speer of Smallwater Education\, a grant from Illinois Clean Energy Foundation and plants provided by the WPPC.  This beautiful native garden provides a place to explore and observe interactions between butterflies\, bees\, and other insects.  This walk will take place immediately after the Sheahan property tour. \n  \nDirections: From the Sheahan’s\, follow Moraine back to South Street\, turn right and Westwood School will be on the right. Gardens are on the west side of the building. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Walk on the Wild Side--Sheahan Property\, Saturday\, July 24\, 2021\, 10am
DESCRIPTION:Jim and Sally moved to Woodstock 4 years ago from downstate Illinois where they participated in bi-weekly prairie walks. When they came to McHenry County and discovered the WPPC\, they decided to upgrade their landscaping to a more native environment. Their home is located on a 1/2 acre lot with a typical suburban yard. With the assistance of WPPC mentors they converted a traditional flower bed into a water retention area that collects rain from the downspout. The prairie plants in this rain garden immediately began attracting wildlife including birds\, butterflies\, bees and other insects. The very first year they had monarch eggs which hatched to caterpillars and successfully developed into butterflies!  They have added an oak tree and native bushes\, removed buckthorn and are transforming other traditional plant beds into native wildflower gardens.  Come learn more about using native plants in a suburban neighborhood setting and maybe you will see a monarch butterfly\, a hummingbird moth or some busy bees! \n  \nDirections: From Woodstock Town Square go West on South Street over Rt. 14 to Westwood subdivision.  Turn right on Moraine and follow Moraine to corner of Castlebar Trail. \n  \n
