Two members of the Wildflower Preservation and Propagation Committee of McHenry County (WPPC) will present a virtual program as part of this year’s Gardenfest. Both members are experienced native plant gardeners and long-term WPPC mentors. Learn about the value of native plants for the environment and wildlife. Emphasis will be on the role that homeowners can play in providing native habitat, as the populations of pollinators, birds, and other wildlife have declined seriously in recent years.
A second presentation from a WPPC volunteer and avid birder will cover attracting birds to your yard using native plants. Hint: most birds will not come to feeders! Like insects, birds have evolved with our native plants and rely on them to provide for their needs year-round. This program will cover using native plants to support the primary needs of birds; food, shelter and nesting. It will also offer tips you can use in your yard to attract birds and help them thrive.
