The WPPC will sponsor a bus trip to Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie on Saturday, July 11, 2027. Midewin is located in Will County just south of Joliet. It’s comprised of over 20,000 acres and is the largest restored prairie habitat in the eastern United States.
We will depart from Crystal Lake South High School at 8am. Our air-conditioned bus should take just under 2 hours to arrive, which includes time for a bathroom break. At Midewin, our first event will be a 25 minute presentation in the air-conditioned welcome center. Afterward there will be time to explore the center’s information panels on their bison project, history, wetlands and prairie areas. You’ll also be able to check out the gift shop and small prairie gardens in front of the center.
Next up will be an hour guided tour of the restored prairie from the comfort of the bus. Upon return to the welcome center we’ll enjoy a catered lunch of meat and/or veggie wraps, pasta salad, chips and drinks. There are tables both inside and outside the center to choose from. We’ll depart for our return trip to Crystal Lake no later than 2pm.
The WPPC will subsidize the trip, so the cost will be only $50 for the bus, tours and lunch. Online registration is now open! Sorry, no credit cards for this event. We’ll send payment instructions after we receive your registration request. We’ll announce the opening via email, so if you’re not on our mailing list, you might want to sign up now!
