2020 List of Illinois Endangered and Threatened Plants and Animals

  • September 6, 2020

A long list of endangered and threatened species.

Click here to see the latest checklist of Illinois species.

A few of the species were a surprise to me, since I have experience with some on my own property – species that I had planted.  Some grow very well, so it is an indication of the threat to the habitat they grow in.  The plantain-leaved sedge, shown in the photos, is one of the species on the list.

Those wishing to help protect these species can become involved in organizations dedicated to  conservation of our natural areas, or they can help to create reservoirs of the species on their own property.  Some of our native plant nurseries have seeds and plants available.
